Good lingerie is delicate by design. Lace, fine straps and soft padding all need a little extra care, but a few simple habits will keep your favourite pieces looking new for much longer.
Hand wash whenever you can
Hand washing is the gentlest option. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water, add a small amount of mild detergent, and let your bras and panties soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Gently swish them around, then rinse in clean water until no soap remains.

If you use a washing machine
- Fasten all hooks first so they do not snag other fabrics.
- Put each piece in a mesh lingerie bag.
- Choose the delicate or hand-wash cycle with cool water.
- Skip fabric softener, which can break down elastic over time.
Never use the dryer
Heat is the biggest enemy of elastic and underwire. Press out extra water with a towel instead of wringing, then dry your lingerie flat or hang bras from the centre, not the straps. Keep them out of strong direct sunlight, which can fade colours.

Store them the right way
- Keep padded bras with the cups nested inside each other, never folded in half.
- Give each bra a day of rest between wears so the elastic can recover.
- Store lace pieces separately so hooks and straps do not catch on them.
Know when to replace
Even with the best care, bras usually need replacing every 6 to 12 months of regular wear. If the band has stretched and no longer feels firm on the tightest hook, it is time for a new one.
